Five Miles from the Sea is a curated group exhibition first held at Victoria University’s Level 17 Artspace in Melbourne and later at Richmond Town Hall . It marked the debut of George Alamidis’s bird sculptures – delicate avian forms hand-assembled from driftwood and other found materials . Poised in quiet dignity before a litany of loss – the names of extinct bird species stenciled like ghosts on the gallery wall – these sculptures evoke journeys and disappearances. Migration, ecological loss, fragility, and adaptation echo through the installation. In this concise, poetic tableau, remnants of nature are transformed into artifacts of memory, inviting reflection on the transient balance between life and loss.
